Vintage Travel Posters

When we zip past billboards on the highway or windows of travel agencies, we see far off exotic destinations that tantalize the senses and arouse our curiosity. The effect of the images captured on a board or sheet of paper can astound the most unassuming person. Such an effect can take us as near as the next American city or as far as Africa, New Zealand, South America, or Europe. This art-form has been around for a little over a century.

Vintage posters have a rich art history that dates back to the 1880's, when first originated by Jules Cheret. Cheret wanted to create a simple yet striking art-form that enlivened the streets of Paris, without detracting from the city's lush, romantic beauty. The first vintage posters had more to do with capturing city life and advertising special events. And, most appropriately, the first vintage posters were created in a great art city during an era called Belle Epoque or "beautiful era."

However, it isn't until about a decade later that vintage travel posters become prolific. As many Europeans traveled outward from their native cities to far off continents, artists who had the privilege of seeing far away places used their talents and techniques to create travel posters that commemorated cities such as Chicago, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Algiers, Tasmania, Cape Town, and Panama City, just to name several. In fact, a very famous travel poster features a guilded Valkyrie, commemorating the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.

Vintage travel posters were so striking and instrumental in the travel industry that their production spread from Paris through all of Europe and even to the United States. The art itself has been able to span from the Belle Epoque period through the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods right up to the 1980's. Therefore, vintage travel posters have a production period of at least one hundred years.

The value of vintage posters featuring travel destinations appreciate very highly. They can run from the low hundreds into the thousands and tens of thousands. Reprints are most commonly produced and usually start as low as $9.99. However, finding an actual original vintage poster in good enough condition for appraisal and resale is nearly impossible. Unfortunately, time, weather, and abuse have all but wiped out many originals. The only reason that reproductions have lasted this long is because the lithography industry was afforded the means to constantly produce thousands of posters in existence from the time of the original print. Nevertheless, if collecting originals is found to be difficult, then reproductions offer as much aesthetic satisfaction.

Inspiring and awesome, vintage travel posters have the ability to simply take you away.
