Many people's childhood memories include moments spent gazing dreamily at images adorning bedroom walls. Celebrity posters have long been a necessity for adolescent bedrooms. Celebrity posters decorate walls, provide gossip, and tuck dreamy teens to sleep at night.
Celebrity posters that have been blazoned in teenage minds include the images of James Dean smoking a cigarette or a scantily clad Britney Spears hugging a Teletubby.
Today celebrity posters still adorn adolescent bedrooms as well as dorm rooms, offices and department stores. Celebrity posters seem to be around every corner, smiling back at us.
With hundreds of stores and specialized websites producing and selling celebrity posters to the masses, it's hard to believe they didn't exist until fairly recently. Although the poster has been around since the 16th century, it took celebrity posters four centuries to take their place in the poster time line.
The poster's long history began with the invention of the printing press in the 1440's by Johannes Gutenberg. His invention allowed people to create messages on large pieces of paper, also known as posters. During the 16th century posters were mainly used to advertise upcoming plays.
It wasn't until Jules Cheret began making posters in 1858 that the poster got any recognition. Cheret, known historically as the father of the poster, popularized the poster with the addition of his new style of three stoned printing. His new style allowed him to create posters in a larger range of colors. Once posters could be printed using any color of the rainbow, they flew off the shelves.
As decades passed, the way in which posters were created changed, as did the public's demand. For example, during the 1940's the poster was used as propaganda for the war while advertising for every day products overtook the poster industry during the 1950's. It wasn't until the 1960's that the celebrity poster officially became popular.
During this decade the public was looking up to musicians and actors as an escape from the harsh reality of racism and the Vietnam War. Celebrity posters were a way for people to show allegiance to their heroes. Popular posters included Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Stones.
Today, a wide variety of celebrity posters are available. They include images of actors, actresses, athletes, musicians, artists and famous personalities. Posters of celebrities are often used to express opinions. A political statement can be made with a poster of George Bush or a dream can be represented with a poster of an Olympic athlete.
Celebrity posters continue to remain a staple in homes, offices, and businesses. Offered through poster manufacturers and magazines, celebrity posters have become the most ubiquitous kind of poster in history. While the surrealist, art deco, and psychedelic posters fade, celebrity posters remain tightly taped to the walls of American culture.
